A miles stone for me since I hit 4008 miles for the year- Its my first complete year of road riding. Last year I only did 1500 miles. My goal this year was 3650. I am not sure what I'll set next year 4500?

Ok Jon your turn! Get that 2000 mark!

    Cold weather question

Those that know me also know that I despise riding in cold weather. That said, it is December and this is East Tennessee and it is cold (no point-of-orders from you Yankees; so far as I'm concerned it's cold here). I got in a bit over 30 miles today in 35-45 deg. by wearing as much clothes as the bike weighs (at least felt like it). First time I've ever used a balaclava. It works surprisingly well considering it is very thin but covers entire head except for between temples and just below eyes.

My question is: How does one keep breath from fogging up eyeglasses when the balaclava is pulled over one's nose? At speed it's not a problem but slow or stopped can almost blind me, even by mouth breathing. There are pastes that can apply to bathroom mirrors to keep them from fogging but I'm not crazy about putting it on my $400 prescription sunglasses.

A related question: Buddy, same question about how you keep your full face shield from fogging over unless you've learned to exhale from some other bodily orifice not on your face?

    Jon,

The answer is easy, just don't slow down and there isn't a problem. Why are you making this more difficult than it needs to be????:no9: Also, if you're riding fast, you should be keeping warm, another reason not to slow down.

Oh, and I know about cold, that's anytime it drops more than 5 degrees below 70. At that point, we're starting to declare emergencies due to the cold here in So Cal. :embarrassed9:

    Curtis.

Simple--Easy, when cranking up hill one is going 4-10mph, lift the shield.
Then when speed builds, pull the shield down. I just breath hard when
going up hill and that is when fogging occurs. Just like shifting gears, one
gets the feel of when to raise the shield.

Loke and I went out yesterday. 30 F and a bit breezy, but nothing drastic.

The ride was HORRIBLE. :hissyfit9: Everything seemed to wrong.

My face mask worked great at least. It got damp with my breath, no avoiding that, but my cheeks and chin didn't feel the least bit cold and I could still breathe through it thanks to the perforations.

It was the longest ride since breaking my tailbone in October. 13.68 miles. :jiggy9: In spite of the aggravation, at least I got out the door for it. I was a little worried about making it home before it got too dark. I made it with about 10 minutes to spare.

Ironicly, what I consider the least annoying part of the ride other than my mask was the icy covering over my right arm where my wheel threw snow. :laugh9: That and my head were probably the warmest parts of me.

First off, Curtis, I ain't Jon but such personal insults don't bother me.

Secondly, here in TN we stop at traffic lights and stop signs.

Thirdly, you talk about cold but ignore heat. At least we don't set the place on fire so that we can't see or breathe. Cold beats fire anytime. That Left Coast Sarcasm is so, so, well my daughter's Mother in Law is from out there...

I have worn a balaclava since I was hiking in Boy Scouts. They work GREAT!!!! But it has to be cold outside to wear one otherwise you ROAST.

I don't have problems fogging up my glasses usually. I leave my eyes, nose and mouth open. I put the balaclava UNDER my chin unless it is REALLY cold (under 40 degrees). That way, you breath normally and your exhales diffuses without a fuss.

If your glasses do fog, try putting a very thin layer of liquid dish soap on them. Let them dry then wipe with a cloth. That usually prevents fogging for me.

Congrats! I was 3 years before hitting 2,000 miles in a year. I remember the feeling of accomplishment. Then reality that, like any drug addict, it'll take more the next year for that same high.
