Well I FINALLY got a ride in today. It was 84 when I left at 9:00 AM and it is 90 when I got back. It was HOT!!! Luckily I am in the shade for about 50% of my ride but still when I stopped and got off my bike I felt light headed. I really had to watch myself to make sure I didn't overheat and dry out. Drank lots of water. Did 21.7 miles today. Hope to ride tomorrow.

Tom & Ed have left me all by myself at Bike Journal. I don't see how I will ever catch them now. After Ed was in the lead for such a long time, I see Tom is now the leader. This is fun to watch!!!

    Cool!

    :jiggy9:

When it's this hot, I limit the power I make.
Like you, I tend to overheat pretty easily.
Also, like you, I left a little after nine and returned in 90+ temps.

20+ miles today... and happy with my speed.
No one else was out playing today, except for that one jogger who only
    did a few miles.

My wife is going to a week long dance camp for adults on friday so I havn't been riding this week. However, while she is gone I expect to pile on some miles.

Oh yeah, 4 hours 41 minutes for the three first finishers. I guess they were able to work together the whole time. My hats are off to them.

    Doing 'nautical' miles!

Took Paul on his first river ride in his kayak he bought a year ago; my son went as well. We put in at Pigeon Forge and float for about 2.5 hours ending up in my back yard. Driving distance is about 3 miles by road, a 15-minute bike ride. Not sure the nautical miles. Jon, is there a conversion table?

Did my 2-lap Cades Cove ride this morning. Very cool at 8:00AM, almost needed a long sleeve shirt but that only lasted for about 30 minutes.

As I reached about 3-miles into my 1st lap, a Ranger told me of a bad accident near the start. When I began my 2nd lap I discovered not one, but two accident sites, each marked with Park Patrol with blue lights flashing; the two sites were about 1/2 mile apart. The first (on a slight downhill) had a crying child resting on the ground being attended but the second site (on a flat road section) was cleared except for what looked like 5 gallons of water on the road and a distinctive red color that could only spell recent trouble. I didn't ask during my ride, but I could tell from the body language of the Rangers posted around the loop that things weren't as usual.

Spent most of the second loop talking to a Boy Scout Troupe of about 20 guys inc. adults from Florida. Ended up video recording 1-minute of their ride and posted on YouTube, My YouTube contact info was given to them on an RRI business card!

I'm not posting a lot of my 'rides' on here but they can be found on YouTube, LogNotching, if interested

Be careful on your rides guys!

Did our regular Thursday Club Ride with the retired folks. It was a blast I had a much better time after fixing my seat. No back pain so this may be a good fix for me.

    29.1 Miles 12.5 average

I wonder if I can at least close the gap on Ward to 100 Miles this weekend- before he puts up 600 in the next few weeks.

Hitting the W&OD trail tomorrow and Bicycles*veinna to look at a new recumbent.

Went and rode the W&OD trail today and stopped by a recumbent shop-Bikes:at:veinna. There were great and very helpful and friendly. They had a Volae I wanted to look at and I test road it. I love the carbon fiber seat. I t wasn't laid back enough but I felt as if I could fly on this thing. I forgot to ask what model it was. It had x9 shifter, Thracian wheels, looked like a carbon fiber front fork. It had a Hostel Shoppe sticker on it.

Does anyone have any experiences or knowledge of the Volae? I had not really heard of them.

I also the road a brand new Ice trike.. Man that thing was kool but weird.

It was a great day I saw half a dozen Recumbents, three trikes all hooked up in a train-that was neat. And spoke to a trike rider at the Bike shop for about 15 minutes. Then we had lunch at the BBQ place near leesburg,,yum yum!

It was a good 51 mile day!

After more research I am thinking this is a Expedition. I like the disk brakes but is this thing really an upgrade over a V-Rex? I read a few reviews that think so. But I will defer to our resident speed demon Ward. Now that i know I really like the hard shell seat should i just wait for a Corsa? (by the way there asking $1300 for this one)

Volae bikes come from the Hostel Shoppe in Wisconsin. They do make good bikes too and they are very comparable to the Bacchetta line with a few exceptions. Tim Woudenberg and Tom Kingsbury rode Volae bikes in RAAM and set the record back in, I think, 2006. The record has been broken since but they proved what a recumbent bike can do.

I'll add that I was at the Hostel Shoppe last summer and it is the finest bike shop I've ever been in. It is an amazing place. I also got to look at their shipping department and their repair area. I was given a grand tour by one of their fine mechanics, Mr Scott Christophersen, who crewed for Tim and Tom and also crewed last summer when Tim did RAAM solo.

I have ordered from them a few times and have always been satisfied and they also have fast shipping. Everyone I've talked to there has been very good.

The advantage of the highracers over a 26/20 setup like the V-Rex is aerodynamics and rolling resistance. The front 26" wheel will roll better than the front 20" and the higher Bottom Bracket and the possibility for a more laid-back seating position is where the real speed advantages lie.

It really comes down to what you want. The price seems good and I have heard many good things about the Hostel shoppe.

I don't know what I want now..lol. A little lighter bike and a hardshell seat for better power transfer are my only 2 requirments. (Other than being in my price range.)

Just adds another bike to my list-

    1.Corsa
    2. Strada
    3. Volae
    4. Extreme/RANS F5?
    5.Bachetta Giro 26?

I will put my V-Rex up for sale with all its goodies when I get back from vacation.

I would think about keeping your V Rex. It will be perfect for greenways and trail riding. But if you only do road riding then you don't need it.
