Another ride to prepare for bikeVA. We were on the road at 6am and the temp was already 79 degrees. Luckily it had rained a bit the night before so even though it was warm it didn't feel that bad. We headed due north, over a spur of the ridgeline that forms Pine Mt and the up towards Lagrange. In the process we found a new road with two wicked climbs.

The first was 110 feet elevation gain but averaged about 9% grade the entire way. To make matters worse the road surface was old aggregate which just seems to suck the life out of your speed. The second climb was 150 feet with sections that were 11-12% but then leveled off to a long section of about 5-6.

We declared it DEAD SNAKE N THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD DAY as we saw them everywhere.

Heading back south towards the Village of Pine Mt we passed lots of cows and horses and on one familiar road the miniature Daschund that despises me and gives chase like a hound of ****. We can't help but laugh at the poor little thing while its coming for me with such absolute determination and hatred.

Into the village we stopped for a V8 and then it was back over the ridgeline before heading SW towards home. We had planned on an 86 mile route but with the temp now at 98 degrees at 10:30 am we shortened it and ended with 75.75 miles. 5:35 total and 5:13 moving with a moving average of 14.5 and a lot of climbing with 4296 feet elevation gain.

I was bored this morning so I got up and took a ride, I ended up heading up Zepp Mountain reaching the top and turned around and continued on. I did a total of 39.09 miles 2500 feet of climbing and averaged 13.2 mph. I stopped to take a pic on the way back down i did not want to stop going up..lol.

I will have to start looking for another GPS this one keeps going on and off and loosing satellites. It's becoming a pain.

As of now, 7pm Sunday June 12, RRI's 2011 BikeJournal is only 150 miles short of 10,000 miles. I've added my paltry 45 miles. Anybody else got any to add from this weekend?

I hope to have close to that within the next 7-8 days Dave. But isn't Jon out there putting in the miles near Niagra Falls?

I woke up this morning and the weather was GLORIOUS! The SUN was warm, yes, but the wind had that perfect coolness to balance it and it was about 10 degrees or more cooler than it has been.

I jumped out the door for a ride with Loke. He was thrilled to get out even if it was just a local run. Then I took a slightly different way which led us past a dog pen. I stopped there and let Loke run loose for a while. He trotted around, sniffing and marking before chasing the stick I threw. After a bit, he came over to sit in front of me, looking up as if to say, 'Okay, I'm bored. Can we go now??'

I had thought to do the Ulva/Gamla Uppsala loop, but then Loke limped a few times, so I cut it short. Only 3.3 miles, but it felt SOOOOO good to get out with the trike!

I'm Back!!!! Buffalo to Rochester New York. Here is the quick version. When I get home next week, I will write up a proper story with pictures.

I had two WONDERFUL days of riding.

Didn't like the first part of my trip as the bike trail was through old, rustbelt part of Buffalo. Trail followed the Niagra river then turned and headed east. Trail and local environment greatly improved as it was now nice houses instead of abandoned commercial buildings.

Then came to the start of the Erie Canal. First part was paved or streets. Ride got even better when I left Buffalo behind and rode paved then aggregate path through little towns and ended in Medina.

Total 44.3 miles. 5 hours with lots of picture stops.

Went from Medina to Rochester today. 40 miles. Beautiful weather. Sunny and high 60's. All the trail was aggregate but firmly packed and easy to ride on.

Much more later. But that gives you a brief outline now. I will post my miles on Bike Journal to help out the group.

    Hurricane Gap Road

Left from Hot Springs and did the 30 mile loop. Would
have been better if I didn't have to push a hundred pounder with
an engine. Couldn't get traction in the loose gravel so had to walk
    along side holding the throttle.

This 16.5-mile ride is located in the Paint Creek Recreation Area, which is in the Nolichucky Ranger District of Tennessee's Cherokee National Forest. After making the climb to the fire tower, the reminder of the ride is less demanding aerobically; you will enjoy traveling along the North Carolina - Tennessee state line, riding on dirt roads, and catching views of distant ridges through the dense forest. Stay on the main road, as a wrong turn could send you down a steep hill into North Carolina when your car is parked back in Tennessee. The scenery is beautiful; dense forest with vistas through the trees and spectacular views from the Rich Mountain fire tower.« show less
