Re: My Most Recent Ride - 2010

This time of year is the 'peak' of my hardest training. I'm still swimming at the local CC, as well as ramping up my miles and effort level. After last night's HARD swim practice left me feeling totally wiped out, I made the dumb move of going to the area hammer ride.

Not much in the way of hills, 11 stop signs and two crossings of a busy 2-lane highway in 29 miles. Usually, it takes a 23 mph average to stay with the 'big boys.' 20-25 mph winds made the going interesting. Seven miles in, I found myself doing 28 mph and losing ground to the pack. I gamely kept at it, but steadily dropped behinder. The hardest part was once I was out there alone, a headwind/up-grade section where I was doing all I could to pull 17 mph -- but at that point I was reeling in the 'B' pack, which the big dogs had unceremoniously spit out. I ended up re-passing about half of them on the last, headwind stretch; or I should say about half of them teamed up and held me off, and I finished with a 21.4 mph average. I could hardly stand by the time I rolled into the parking lot. I'm pretty sure I was above 90% MHR for at least 40 minutes of the ride.

My buddy, on a NoCom, beat the 'A' pack. I'll get there eventually, but it sure looks like I'm in for a long haul to accomplish it. My legs are killing me today.

Great ride, I know the feeling of being in no-mans land between the fast pack and the not as fast group. You end up working harder than everyone. I have been concentrating on climbing and riding solo this year, best ride so fat 38 miles with 20.6 mph average.

Yesterday rode with a couple of DF buddies and just did high speed repeats around them.

Man you guys are something else. I am so glad that I am not a producer of testoterone.;) I like my high speed rides but my idea of high speed doesn't include going anaerobic. I did that once, to dust a DF and although I dusted him...later it was such a nasty feeling I couldn't breathe and I saw little sparkly things in front of my eyes I thought I was going to be sick.

It was still fun though :D

Last Fall, Serenity, a young and fit DF rider passed me, going uphill.
He was using his aerobars and staying planted in the saddle.
We were peddling against a headwind.

When I saw him a few miles later up a side-road, I recognized his jersey:
the man was on the side of the road, on his knees.
His bike (I could see an aerobar) was on it's side, on the
side of the road, next to the, um, 'resting' rider.

Brave man, dusting me off like that: I won't go that far!

Oh, this a "recent ride" thread.
    Sorry.

So, yesterday I put in a fast 26 miles.
The first half was a series of sprints an' the last half was trying to go fast on the hills.
    Nice workout.
    I'm (don't be distracted by my testosterone-fueled ego-enhancing rhetoric!)
    not all that fast!
My average speed for the first half of the ride was 18.6mph and my av'ge speed for the day was 16.5mph.

I'm not sure my average speed is the slowest of this group, but probably not far. 9.5 to 11 mph -ish by myself depending on weather and terrain. 8 to 9 mph if I have the dog with me.

Hoping maybe I can get out for a ride today. I might warm up enough and I'm finally feeling better from the cold. Managed to sleep the night through last night without getting up to take cough syrup.

A ride would be good. Loke is being a complete PITA. :rolleyes9:

Should not be in this thread at all. It is obviously only
for foreiners that descended upon us that ride a century
averaging 25+ mph. Anyway, took the P-38 for it's first
ride this year. It amazed me. Got back to the house to
find that the fastest of all bikes (at one point in history)
had taken fat boy 5 miles in 35 minutes.

I rode a short 12 miles yesterday at lunch. Took my V Rex to Doc to adjust the front brake and change my gears. My older V Rex could get up hills easier. Found out my current Granny gear of 24 was larger than my old V Rex granny gear of 22. So I am having a new Granny gear install for this old engine.

I got to ride today!!! Weather and my cold cooperated enough to allow for the first time in 11 days. :jiggy9: I didn't want to push myself though, so just kept it to one of my short loops (14-ish) miles. It's blogged though I'm getting kinda bored blogging my Ulva/Gamla Uppsala Loop with a picture of cloudy skies and another of flowers in poor lighting under a tree. ;)

Glad your feeling better. By the way you ride about the same speed as me.
I think it is pretty cool to have trained your dog to go with you. 8 mph does not sound bad for doing that .

Went on a ride yesterday with Knox Revolution and others all uprights except me.
20 miles and it felt good but I am way to slow for those folks.
Me and another woman way behind. I still felt good when I finished but I felt like I pushed it as much as I could and still averaged around 10 mph.

    An aside:
Luke who works at the fountain city pedlers was on that ride and stayed back with us. Nice guy also says he has worked on recumbents and use to live in Chattanooga and knows Art Hagood.
Not all upright bicyclists are snobs, quite a few will help you out. I believe the best way to convert is to infiltrate.
I took two rides this week:
    1. 10 mile after work one evening.
    2. 20 mile last night with the Knox Revolution group and others.
I am helping out with a ride for kids in sequoyah hills tomorrow but perhaps I will get in a few laps there after.
Figured the weather was going to be sloppy for the Ride the Plains ride and I really like the neighborhood ride series, want to support that a bit.
Anyway keep riding and take care.

Art sounds like someone I might have met on CNC in 2001. Sold Visions out of his garage? He had a Saber that year. I rode my V-Rex that year, with fairing; I'd just gotten my Baron but hadn't had time to get it set up before the tour. As it's set up now, the Baron would have been truly awesome on that route.

Re: My Most Recent Ride - 2010

Yesterday afternoon I went out for my last workout of the week,
    riding my default 20-mile route.

It was blowing a steady 10mph breeze, which made the ride more fun than usual.
Peddling with the wind, my average speed was 5mph over my usual average speed. Also, going up hills at around 10mph? There was no breeze: sweat just sort of sat there, in place. Kind of like at the gym's stationary recumbent bikes!

Peddling against the wind was a good workout, whittling my normal av'g. speed down 5mph.

    ---

    Thought of the ride:
it's TN. law, isn't it, that it is legal (no, required!) to pass on blind curves on two-lane roads, crossing double-yellow lines... without signalling.
    Right?
    I thought so.

    ;)

Probably the same Art. Can not remember his last name right now but Hagood has a bike shop out of his garage with several kind of recumbents now.
At the time I was looking he did not have what I wanted so I got my Vision off the internet and had him put it together for me and showed me how to ride it.. He was nice to do that.

I am not familiar with Baron bikes but will look up .

Glad to see us getting out for rides. :)

I rode today as well. Two rides in two days. Could it be I'm finally getting some training in for touring? One can hope.

A nice 20 mile ride with 15 miles of it over NEW TERRITORY! I was so hyped! It didn't show in my speed, but I was grinning from ear to ear. Blogged with quite a few photos.
