John, you stated that part of your ride was boring. Sorry, but I have a difficult time when folks say they get bored out there. I can't seem to relate to the boredom.

But then, I've read and heard stories about lots of RAAM riders becoming bored, especially in Kansas. One year they took highway 50 through Nevada and Utah. That is called the Lonliest road in America. Well, that sounded like something I'd like to see!

So on our way back from California, we purposely took highway 50 and I have to say both my wife and I really enjoyed that highway and I'd recommend it to all. There is some beautiful country to drive through. I feared the road would not be good but to my surprise it was excellent pavement all the way.

I guess 6 weeks off the bike took its toll. Today I headed out on one of my favorite rides which is usually 34 miles total. I didn't make it. In fact, I had to stop 3 times for short rests. For some reason the heat seemed to be getting to me and that is unusual. I usually enjoy riding in the heat of the day. There was virtually no wind so my rest stops were short as the sweat would roll a lot. Fortunately I had ice water with me; more than enough. Anyway, I only made 21 miles. Maybe more tomorrow. It is supposed to be hotter and more humid then so I don't know what might happen. I have some appointments in town so might ride to those.

I managed to get in a pleasant ride this morning, before the day got too hot. Food being the essential motivator, my son joined me on a trip that stopped midpoint at a Krispy Kreme. Total mileage: 19.2 miles Fat content: don't know and don't want to know :biggrin9:

Dennis, what was boring about it was that the scenery didn't change for 15 miles. No hills, no shade. Just like in the 2nd pic. the only hills are within a few miles of the last rest stop. It was great for a speed run, although for my tastes there weren't enough uprights to pass. But it's always warm on the day we do this ride, and I always get overheated along this stretch.

I haven't been on my bent either much. :hissyfit9: I have been on vacation, then hot days mixed with rain.

Today I have an 8:30 AM teleconference, then I am going on a ride while it is only 78 degrees to start with. This heat kills me!!!!

One thing I do is mix water with an electrolyte drink (Cytomax). This not only keeps me hydrated, but replaces the salt I loose from sweating so much. (And yes I sweat A LOT when it is hot out. Stay clear!)

    Wish me luck!!!

Re: My Most Recent Ride - 2010

Rode early yesterday morning. Started in 75 degree weather and ended in 84 degree heat with 70% humidity.

When I finally got back to my office and in air conditioning I felt I had been ridden hard and put up wet. Did 20 miles in 1 hour 15 minutes. I wore a heart rate monitor and I was averaging around 150 bpm. That is high for me. I contribute part of that to not riding lately and part to the heat.

OK RRI knowledge bank, I have a question for you. As the temperature gets hotter outside, does that actually increase your heart rate? I have not clue.

One other fact. I forgot to put SUN blocker on so I looked like a lobster. Fun... I think...

Re: My Most Recent Ride - 2010

Jon, most times I don't think heat alone will cause the heart rate to increase unless it becomes very extreme. However, heat plus any exercise will increase the heart rate. Then again, I'm not a doctor; just my observations.

As for the sun blocker, I simply don't put it on. Oh I have a few times on the back of my neck. That has been while in Oceanside, CA before RAAM. Something about being by the ocean and the hot sun blazing. If RAAM were held in July or August I'd not even apply it then. I'm fortunate to have been sunburned very few times in my life. If that were to change, I'd then have to use it but won't unless I absolutely have to. I hate the stuff.

Re: My Most Recent Ride - 2010

Heat probably causes some increase in HR, but not directly. Getting rid of heat is through sweating, and sweating doesn't put a load on the heart. OTOH, in hotter weather, dehydration can be a problem, and dehydration DOES increase heart rate. When the weather is hotter than you're used to, you should take frequent breaks and monitor your HR. If it doesn't recover the way it should, stay in the shade and drink!

Re: My Most Recent Ride - 2010

The Holland Hundred on 7/17 was tougher than I expected, for a couple of reasons. Most significantly, I took the NoCom and discovered out on the road that the front hub is loose, causing my disc brake to drag with every pedal stroke. People could actually hear me coming up behind them by the scraping sound. Not good! The other thing about it was that our route seemed to have a stop sign at every road for the first 25 miles, and every couple of miles after that. I've never seen so many stop signs in my life! In spite of it all, I didn't do too badly, 101.9 miles and 19.8 mph average. I was fried at the end, though. Not only my legs from the effort; but the day was brilliantly clear, and my sunblock sort of gave up the ghost and left me a little bit pink!

I only took one good clip, about a mile stretch. Watch the difference between chip-seal and smooth pavement!

    Hi all!

Glad to see some of us are getting out for rides. I actually managed a short one today. Our heatwave broke and it was actually on the cool side today. My knees have felt like they've been improving and are painfree (even after 6.5 hours on the trainer Wed & Thurs) and the with the chill, I decided to give Loke and I are a very short ride. Just the River Loop with no extentions.

Loke was VERY excited and he was doing the 'kangaroo hop until getting good speed for a flat out run) thing for the first .75 mile. But he soon fizzled and was the draggy, pokey husky he's been for the majority of our few rides this year.

It was just 3.something miles, but it got us out for the first time since June.

Oh and from the cycling and the new gym I've joined... I've lost 5 pounds this week.

Tachyon XC Micro helmet cam. Can't say I'm very happy with it, though. It takes nice pictures when it's working. But it turns itself off then doesn't want to turn back on, or I'm turning it off thinking I'm turning it on... The beep isn't loud enough with wind in my ears. Sound sucks, too. Unless I leave the back off, and then the batteries and memory are unprotected. I'll put fresh batteries in it for Black Bear this Sunday. We'll see if I can capture any good footage.
