I got out yesterday for a quick ride. Rode 1:15 hours and did 16 miles. I rode the greenway. With all the rain we had Saturday there was debris all over the path and I didn't have fenders or 3 wheels to go through it so I went very slow.

I did ride by the Tennessee River and it is UP and MUDDY!!!! I haven't seen it this high in a long time. After our all time record breaking drought last year, we are 4 inches above normal in rain this year. We need it!!! However, I am starting to think I live in Seattle not Knoxville!!!

It's finally quit raining out here. We had rain every day for two weeks. The creek in the back yard flooded last week. No real harm done. Just some debris washed up on the edge of the bank and was left after the water went down. Guess I'll have to rethink putting the veggie garden down thre next year:rolleyes9:.

    Redemption of sorts

last week I wrote about being pretty well stomped by my riding pals. The kettweisel just didn't seem up to the job of hanging with a 16-17 mph group ride. So, I studied the Weisels riding characteristics to see if I couldn't maximize my ride this week. By studying the garminconnect playback of the ride a few things became clear. I could climb as fast or faster than they could, I could not keep up with them on the downhills, and I was putting out a lot more wattage to hang with them on the flats. But the most notable thing was that pedaling as hard/fast as I could on the downhill's netted me almost no gain in speed.

So, I met up with them Wed and off we went. We were missing one of the big guys so my thought was "great, they will be faster tonight". The first four or five miles were easy warm up and then they began putting on the steam right about the same hilly area as the week before. This time instead of trying to keep up with them on the downhills, I coasted and hammered on the upside. This seemed to be working as we approached the 9 mile spot where they usually stop I wasn't far behind. Here I put the next part of my plan in place. I caught up with the slowest guy and said "I'm going straight here, ya'll catch me if you can".

Now, by going straight I was cutting off about 2.4 miles of the 36 mile loop. My guess was that if I worked hard I just might beat them back. I did have some steeper hills on the section I would be taking before it joined back up but as I was riding the hills very strong I guessed it would work out. So, off I went while the three of them watched.

Over the next 20 miles I kept the Weisel rocking. I only stopped once for nature and to trade out water bottles and other than that at the 26 mile point I had a whopping 15.7 adverage. I was amazed that they hadn't caught me but I could tell that running that hard for that long was beginning to take its toll.

I saw them as the flew down a long hill behind me. It was about 2 miles shy of the cars. Man, I had thought I was going to make it. The last uphill had really seen me loosing steam so the doubts of my beating them was feeling more real. I still managed a very respectable 15.3 adv for over 33 miles, and I beat the slow guy by about 5 minutes. They said their ride adverage was about 18 but they had stopped twice. Once they had slowed down wondering if I was behind them.

Anyway, impressed em a little bit and myself as well. The Weisel will never be a speed demon but at least I am beginning to get the most out of her.

Way to go Ward! :yay: Jon, sorry you had to ride a DF, but glad you at least saw  some recumbents out and about.

I got my RANS Force 5 out last week and rode it around a local loop here some. INSTANT 20% higher average speed w/o any other changes, and it's still just as tricky as it ever was. ha, ha

With the Bike-E one can get out and pedal and not 'think' about ANYthing, but with the Force 5 you've got to watch for heal-strike, pay attention to your balance at slow speeds, etc.

Still, both are fun bikes, just built for different purposes. :wink9:

Re: My Most Recent Ride II

'Ole Buddy really KNOWS what he's talking about here. My dad taped a show for me last week that talked about the power of the mind to heal, or not heal the human body. In part, here's one study it mentioned...

In the study, 180 patients with knee pain were randomized into three groups. One group received debridement, in which worn, torn, or loose cartilage is cut away and removed with the aid of a pencil-thin viewing tube called an arthroscope. The second group underwent arthroscopic lavage, in which the bad cartilage is flushed out. The third group underwent simulated arthroscopic surgery; small incisions were made, but no instruments were inserted and no cartilage removed.

Of the 324 participants who met inclusion criteria for the study, 44 percent declined to participate, demonstrating they understood that they might not receive the actual surgery. Before undergoing surgery, participants also wrote in their chart, "On entering this study, I realize that I may receive only placebo surgery. I further realize that this means that I will not have surgery on my knee joint. This placebo surgery will not benefit my knee arthritis."

During two years of follow-up, patients in all three groups reported moderate improvements in pain and ability to function. However, neither of the intervention groups reported less pain or better function than the placebo group. Indeed, the placebo patients reported better outcomes than the debridement patients at certain points during follow-up. Throughout the two years, the patients were unaware of whether they had received real or placebo surgery.

Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, is the most common form of arthritis, and commonly occurs in the knee. Symptoms include pain, stiffness, and swelling. Treatment typically involves pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory drugs, along with heat-therapy and exercise. When these fail, surgery is often recommended. In the United States, it is estimated that more than 650,000 arthroscopic debridement or lavage procedures are performed each year, many of these for arthritis, at a cost of about $5,000 each.

"This study has important policy implications," Wray said. "We have shown that the entire driving force behind this billion dollar industry is the placebo effect. The health care industry should rethink how to test whether surgical procedures, done purely for the relief of subjective symptoms, are more efficacious than a placebo."

    source innovations-report

And another similar study (entitled Arthroscopic Knee Surgery - No Better than Placebo ) also revealed...

A total of 84 patients with moderate-to-severe osteoarthritis of the knee were assigned to receive both arthroscopic surgery and maximal medical treatment, while 86 patients with moderate-to-severe osteoarthritis received only maximal medical therapy. Two years after completing treatment, both groups of patients were re-evaluated. Using previously validated osteoarthritis and physical disability scoring tools, the authors of this study determined that the addition of arthroscopic surgery to maximal medical treatment was not associated with any measurable improvement in osteoarthritis symptoms or arthritis-related physical disability.

Buddy's living proof of what works, and it seems exercise (or physical therapy) is a BIG, BIG part of that. :yes9:

That's a d*** good report Jon. Glad you got to do that. Just
think how much fun that would be on the V-Rex. I'm impressed
with the way you improvised so well. Now, we should all get
out there and ride and write a report.

A very nice report, Jon. But I lost track; how many ibuprofen did U take altogether?

Your 15mph sign is becoming more common on bike routes as a probably vain attempt at keeping the hammerheads from running over someone.

The sign reminds me of a cycling trip once where we saw a yellow diamond caution sign on the bike trail with a graphic and wording "Caution Boat crossing". We thought this most puzzling since the river was several hundred yards away and the trail never crossed it. Turns out it really is a boat crossing when the local rowing club takes their long boats off the racks to the trail's left and carries them across to the river on the right.

Ditto what the others have said: GREAT REPORT. The only thing that took me by surprise was at the end when you stated you saw some 300 other bicyclists out there. From all your pictures, it gave me the impression you were the only one on the trail. ha, ha Kudos Jon, you've got a good knack for this!

Re: My Most Recent Ride II

Didn't have a lot of time to ride today at work. (Only 1 hour) but the weather was soooo beautiful, I couldn't pass it up. Rode 10 miles but WOW I can't believe how much more comfortable a recumbent is to a DF bike. Plus one thing I forgot to mention was I felt like I was riding in a high chair!!! I thought I was going to get nose bleeds from being so high up over the ground!!! :yikes: There is a reason I sold my 3 DF bikes when I got my first recumbent!!!
