    Gearing Up!!!

It is early (7:40 AM), it's going to be sunny and hot (mid 90s). So I am going to take off for Coulter Bridge and ride one of my favorite rides which is 33 miles. You start at the Coulter Bridge then follow Old Walland Highway which dumps you off in Townsend TN. From there you follow the road into the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and take a sharp left up to Tremont. Half of the ride is following a river or stream and shady which will be very welcomed on this hot day.

For you folks who have come to the Smoky Mountain Recumbent Rally, this is a ride they usually follow but start at U Man.

I plan to stop by and see Keilla at U Mann to visit. This is the first time this year I am going on this ride. I am very behind my normal riding schedule.

I will take pictures and post them and a map of the ride for those who might want to do this in the future.

    Wish me luck!!!

OK I made it. Had a great 33 mile ride. If you haven't been out on your bent lately, I am attaching pictures of my ride to show you why you need to get out and enjoy this summer!!!!

The last picture is when I went to see U Man. They have moved down the road. So I will stop by on my next ride.

    Enjoy your ride!!! :bike:

They were releasing birds but before they did they banded them to see how they do in the wild.

Yes get out and ride no telling what you will see. I went out for a 28 miler yesterday on Kadiddle and rode along the river trail as two deer ran just ahead of me on either side. I also saw a small bob cat.

I've been getting rides in. The one on Saturday was a hard slog in the area north of Stockholm. Wound up pedalling and walking the trike on trails more suited to mountain bikes. But some nice scenery, the inside of a church from the 1400's and a pretty castle.

Anyone else? It's been getting terribly quiet here.

Rode my trusty V Rex yesterday on the greenways. 13 miles. That V Rex is an incredibly stable work horse. I love riding it on trails!!!

June is a good month for me. For the whole year I rode 535 miles. In June I rode about half of them with 235 miles.

Weather, work and my health are all cooperating right now. Going to visit friend over the 4th holiday and bring my Strada with me as we ride around Apex NC.

Then in two weeks I am off to Ohio to ride the Greene Country Rails-To-Trails ride. Plan to take the Strada with me on that ride also. 4 days of flat riding on paved rails-to-trails. They stay in tents at the county park. I stay in a hotel with my wife! I get the best of both worlds. Plan to take some pictures of the ride and post them here.

Is no one else riding??? I'm with Terii. We are very quiet on the boards these days.

    19.75 miles yesterday.

With no plans for his vacation, Jens suggested he actually drives for drop off and pick-ups for a few days to let me ride the Mälardalsleden (The Mälar's Valley Route) since I'm not recovered/fit enough from the stroke to do a tour. Something to aim for and NOT local, but not silly far away either.

The weather turned into a SUN and cloud mix. Would have preferred straight clouds or sunny with colder temps. I stopped lots to water Loke and let him rest in the shade until his panting eased and then we'd move on. Some lovely scenery and of course, the usual churches. Loke jogged along like a champ and after half an hour at the church where I declared an end to the ride, he was harassing me to go on. :rolleyes9:

There was one section of the ride I was very peeved about. The route was marked through a gate barely wide enough for both of my wheels with a 1 foot step down made of cement. There was no way to squeeze through and not bang the bottom of my trike. Then it was a squeeze between weeds, hedges and young trees. Both wheels in the weeds and I had zig-zag back and forth what little I could to keep the running bar from getting hung on trees, while Loke walked ahead on the flexi-leash.

Then I had to wrestle the trike up almost 18 inches onto an old rail bridge with obstacles protruding inconveniently. The wood to either side of the sleepers, just wide enough for the trike. Getting down was it's own especial nightmare. Then it was a quarter mile of trail-bed comprised of nothing but loose rocks the size of baseballs. I exaggerate not. :eek9:

This is a popular, well marked and long established bike route and no one on anything short of a fat bike is riding on that strip. I couldn't even walk on those stones to push the trike, yet people on two wheels have no option but to walk it, twisting ankles as the rocks shift and turn the whole way. That little bit of less than a half mile took me over 40 minutes.

Fortunately that was all so it wasn't nearly as bad as my last ride away from Uppsala. The rest of it was actually pretty nice.

Worried about Loke though. He was fine through the run yesterday, always wanting to do faster than I wanted him to do in the warmth. No problems on his last walk of the evening and even did his happy food dance as gleefully as ever. This morning, he can hardly walk. Some problem with his front left paw or leg. Jens thinks it's the paw though it looks fine and he doesn't react any more than usual to me examining it. I think it's the shoulder being painful and so he doesn't want to put weight on the leg.

Loke time with me on longer rides might be over. I might be losing my cycle partner for some of the time at least. :sad9: Just as he turns 10...

    Terri,

Sorry to hear about your ride and Loke! Last year I rode the C&O canal ride after a tropical depression (read LOTS & LOTS of rain). The paths were so muddy, I had a terrible time getting through them. So your description on your ride reminded me that not all rides are created equal.

On a good note, I leave for my PAVED rails-to-trails ride in Xenia Ohio this Wednesday. This is a group and supported ride. Last time I did it was 2008. That was one of my first centuries. This year my goal is a metric century since I haven't gotten the training miles in and I want be able to walk the next day! :injured:

At the Greene County Cycling Classic ride today. My first ride day. Weather gorgeous at 70 degrees and sunny. Rode 34 miles today. Very beautiful ride with 95% on rails-to-trails. You can get spoiled here!!! They have 330 miles of rails-to-trails here. WOW!!! Will post full ride and info next week pictures.

Saw Drangonfly here. This is his home turf.

Saw lots of trikes and a few SWB two wheel recumbents. I had the only Bacchetti so far. Had lots of questions about my bent. Maybe get some converts???

Day 2. Did a metric century today. This is great. Flat and 100% rails-to-trails. Great ride though got up to 90 degrees.

Tomorrow is a 54 mile ride. Thunder storms here now. Glad I am back in my hotel room rather than camping!!!! I am such a weenie.

Saw 20 trikes today. But saw a red Bacchettea giro. Almost grabbed it at the rest area because it looked identical to my bent.

Yay! Others are riding! And congratulations on century. I've yet to accomplish one of those of any sort.

Getting ready to leave for the southern part of Sweden. Not taking my computer so it'll be a week before I can post again.
