MURFREESBORO, TN — A group of bicyclists were waiting for a traffic light to change on Medical Center Parkway on Saturday when a driver suddenly ran into them, killing one and injuring another.

Officials say around 11:50 a.m., the driver of a sedan swerved off the road, jumped a curb and ran into the group of bicyclists, who were stopped on a sidewalk at the intersection of Joe Knight Dr. and Medical Center Parkway.

The men were riding recumbent bikes, four-wheel bikes that allow you to pedal in a seated position. One of them was rushed to the Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital nearby, where he died. The other was injured, but is in stable condition, according to police.

The Murfreesboro Police Department Fatal Accident Crash Team is investigating the crash, and wants to speak to any driver or witness who may have seen the accident take place or been in the area during the crash.

UPDATED Feb. 5, 2024: Murfreesboro, TN - The Murfreesboro Police Department Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) is actively continuing their investigation into a devastating crash that claimed the life of a recumbent bike rider and left another injured on Medical Center Parkway.

76-Year-old Terry Sague of Castalian Springs, died after being hit by a car while he was on the sidewalk, on his recumbent bike. The incident occurred when the driver of a 2020 Lexus RC3 2-door coupe reportedly lost control, swerved, and tragically collided with the group of bicyclists who were patiently waiting for a traffic light to change at the intersection of Joe Knight Dr. and Medical Center Parkway. The preliminary investigation, conducted by FACT, indicates that the car jumped a curb, striking the bicyclists on the sidewalk at around 11:49 a.m. this past Saturday (02/03/2024), according to the MPD.

Police later released further details suggesting the driver of the Lexus skidded and swerved from the inside lane of Medical Center Parkway, continued onto the sidewalk, and then collided with two of the three recumbent bicycle riders. The car then hit a pedestrian crosswalk pole and came to a stop after striking a tree. Emergency responders swiftly transported Mr. Sague to Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, where unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the coupe was promptly taken to the hospital for evaluation and has since been released. However, the possibility of charges against the driver is being considered as the investigation unfolds. The driver of the Lexus was not hurt.

FACT urges anyone who may have been in the vicinity at the time of the crash to come forward as potential witnesses. The investigative team is keen on gathering information from drivers or bystanders who can contribute valuable insights into the tragic incident. If you were in the area at the time and saw what happened, please contact Officer Carlie Coe by email at 1127*murfreesborotn.gov.

In the aftermath of the collision, Medical Center Parkway between Arnhart Drive and Thompson Lane was closed for nearly six hours to facilitate investigative procedures. The diligent efforts of FACT continue as they work towards understanding the circumstances surrounding this fatal crash.
