MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — A life was lost following a crash at the corner of Joe Knight Drive and Medical Center Parkway in Murfreesboro Saturday.

“Actually, the day that the accident happened, I had ridden my bike to work because it was a gorgeous day,” said Sarah Lovett.

Lovett soon learned the news about a crash as she left work that day.

“I got off at 1:30 and I started checking my phone and it had just blown up with all these calls,” she said. “And my daughter from California was like, ‘Mom, are you guys okay?'”

According to the Murfreesboro Police Department, 76-year-old Terry Sague was part of a group of cyclists waiting on the sidewalk on their recumbent bikes when a car swerved, jumped a curb, and ran into them on Saturday, Feb. 3.

“They just were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Lovett. “I mean, it was just, they thought they were doing the right, safe thing.”

Sague was killed while another cyclist was taken to the hospital.

“I think the hardest thing is that people instantly blamed the cyclists,” said Lovett.

For decades, Lovett has been riding with the Murfreesboro Bike Club.

While she doesn’t know Sague personally, she said she’s likely crossed paths with him and other recumbent riders around the city.

“That particular group of riders, I think they avoid roads…I see them on the greenway, I see them on sidewalks, getting them from point A to point B on the greenway,” Lovett said.

While Lovett is heartbroken to hear this news, she hopes drivers will be more cautious of those who walk and bike around the city.

Driver Crashes into Bicyclists at Murfreesboro Intersection, One Dead Rutherford Source

Mufreesboro, TN – (February 3, 2024) Murfreeesboro Police Department Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) is investigating a fatal crash where a driver ran into a group of bicyclists as they waited for a traffic light to change on Medical Center Parkway.

A man riding a recumbent bike (four-wheel bike that allows the person to pedal in a seated position) was rushed to nearby Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital where he died. Another recumbent bike rider was injured and is listed in stable condition.

The preliminary investigation shows the driver of a sedan swerved, jumped a curb and ran into the group of bicyclists stopped on a sidewalk at the intersection of Joe Knight Dr. and Medical Center Parkway around 11:49 a.m. Saturday.

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital, evaluated and released.

Charges could be pending against the driver.

Investigators are wanting to speak to any driver or witness that might have been in the area at the time of the crash.

Medical Center Parkway between Arnhart Drive and Thompson Lane was closed for nearly six hours.

The crash remains under investigation by FACT.

Both Weekend Fatal Murfreesboro Crash Victims Identified; Investigation Continues Rutherford Source

Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD) Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) investigators are still investigating the causes of two separate fatal crashes over the weekend in Murfreesboro. Both fatal crash victims identified.

Terry Sague, 76, of Castalian Springs, died after being hit by a car while he was on the sidewalk on his recumbent bike waiting for the traffic light to change at the cross walk. The crash occurred at the corner of Joe Knight Drive and Medical Center Parkway at 11:49 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3. A second recumbent bike rider was sideswiped and injured. He was taken to the hospital, and at last check, was listed in stable condition.

So far, the investigation indicates, the driver of a 2020 Lexus RC3 skidded and swerved from the inside lane of Medical Center Parkway, continued onto the sidewalk, and collided with two of three recumbent bicycle riders. The car then hit a pedestrian crosswalk pole and came to a stop after hitting a tree.

The driver of the Lexus was not hurt. Charges may be pending.

1 dead, 1 injured after ‘serious’ Murfreesboro crash involving bicyclistsWKRN News 2

Murfreesboro, TN — A deadly crash involving a car and a group of bicyclists is under investigation in Murfreesboro, officials said.

According to the Murfreesboro Police Department, the “serious” crash took place at the corner of Joe Knight Drive shortly after 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Authorities said the preliminary investigation shows a 2020 Lexus RC3 swerved, jumped a curb, and ran into the group of bicyclists — who were stopped on a sidewalk while waiting for a traffic light to change — at the intersection of Joe Knight Drive and Medical Center Parkway.

A man riding a recumbent bike — a four-wheel bike that allows someone to pedal in a seated position — was reportedly rushed to nearby Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, where he died. Murfreesboro police later identified him as 76-year-old Terry Sague of Castalian Springs.

As of 5:50 p.m., officials said another recumbent bike rider who was injured is listed in stable condition

The driver of the Lexus was also brought to the hospital before being evaluated and released, but police said charges could be pending against the driver.

Authorities said crews closed the outbound lanes of Medical Center Parkway between Thompson Lane and Arnhart Drive for nearly six hours following the crash, which remains under investigation by the department’s Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT).

'It gutted me.' Bike community responds to man's death on a sidewalk in Murfreesboro News Channel 5 Nashville

MURFREESBORO, TN — On one of the busiest streets in Murfreesboro, someone on a bike on a sidewalk was hit and killed by a car.

"As I read more of what the Murfreesboro Police posted — that they were on the sidewalk — then it made more sense to me. They were just at the wrong place at the wrong time," said Sarah Lovett.


Sarah Lovett is an active bicyclist in this area. She is the advocacy and engagement chair of the Murfreesboro Bike Club.

While Lovett doesn't know the victim, she says him being on his recumbent bike is largely irrelevant.

"To be sitting on a sidewalk crossing over after having lunch — which is what I assume they were doing — it just makes no sense. It could've been a young mother with a baby carriage or it could've been an older couple trying to get to their doctor's appointment," Lovett said.

The victim was riding with other people on recumbent bikes, which are bikes set lower to the ground. A second person was also hit and hospitalized. That person is expected to live.

According to police, the driver of a sedan jumped a curb and ran into the group while they were stopped on a sidewalk at Joe Knight Drive.

It has sparked some strong reactions.

"We're all guilty of not following the law 100%. To always assume that the bicyclist is at fault is just not fair... any more to assume the motorist is at fault. You need to know the facts," Lovett said.

Police said there was nothing doctors could do to save the cyclist, despite the fact that the crash happened within walking distance from Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital.

According to Murfreesboro Police, the driver of the car was evaluated at the hospital and released. When we asked if they will be charged, a police spokesperson said there were no updates.
