UPDATED Feb. 5, 2024: Murfreesboro, TN - The Murfreesboro Police Department Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) is actively continuing their investigation into a devastating crash that claimed the life of a recumbent bike rider and left another injured on Medical Center Parkway.

76-Year-old Terry Sague of Castalian Springs, died after being hit by a car while he was on the sidewalk, on his recumbent bike. The incident occurred when the driver of a 2020 Lexus RC3 2-door coupe reportedly lost control, swerved, and tragically collided with the group of bicyclists who were patiently waiting for a traffic light to change at the intersection of Joe Knight Dr. and Medical Center Parkway. The preliminary investigation, conducted by FACT, indicates that the car jumped a curb, striking the bicyclists on the sidewalk at around 11:49 a.m. this past Saturday (02/03/2024), according to the MPD.

The car then hit a pedestrian crosswalk pole and came to a stop after striking a tree. Emergency responders swiftly transported Mr. Sague to Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, where unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the coupe was promptly taken to the hospital for evaluation and has since been released. However, the possibility of charges against the driver is being considered as the investigation unfolds. The driver of the Lexus was not hurt.

FACT urges anyone who may have been in the vicinity at the time of the crash to come forward as potential witnesses. The investigative team is keen on gathering information from drivers or bystanders who can contribute valuable insights into the tragic incident. In the aftermath of the collision, Medical Center Parkway between Arnhart Drive and Thompson Lane was closed for nearly six hours to facilitate investigative procedures. The diligent efforts of FACT continue as they work towards understanding the circumstances surrounding this fatal crash.

Wow. What can be said - the recumbent rider was ON THE SIDEWALK. I was going to bring up what we can do to enhance recumbent safety, but it appears nothing would have helped here. EXCEPT that I would say light timings and turn islands force drivers to be aware of cyclists and pedestrians, and, in the event of complete loss of control, place curbs and poles in the impact path.
Still, recumbent bicycles are the safest bikes on the road, for multiple reasons.
    Godspeed, my friend.

Agreed. I really see little difference, from a driver’s point of view, between cyclists...assuming they are visible. (ie lights, flags, etc.) To me the real difference (nowadays) is driver inattention due to cellphone distraction.

I saw a FB video the other week where a tiltbed tow truck had stopped to tow a wrecked vehicle off of the interstate, but before he could hook the disabled car another car driven by a 21 year old (traveling at FULL interstate speed) accidentally utilized the tiltbed tow truck as a ramp and leaped for some 120 feet through the air before crashing back to the ground. In-attention at its best‼️

I would love to see a transcript between the inattentive 21 year old driver and their own insurance company as they tried to explain their way out of that. :mmm:
