So you want one of these cool new electric bikes we’ve been talking so much about these days–but that $3,000 price tag is a bit too steep (even with the electric assist.) Enter the E-Bike Conversion Kit, which turns any bike into a pedelec, at about a third of the cost.

The E-BikeKit system includes a wheel with a 500 amp hub motor, a 36v LiFePO4 battery and all of the hardware needed to install it. The best part being, you can attach it to whatever bike you already know and love, be it mountain bike, cruiser or recumbent. The company claims that installing the irkit is simple enough for anyone to handle, but for the mechanically un-inclined, bike shops will do the deed for around $100.

Beyond the obvious benefits of increased exercise associated with commuting on a bike, the E-Bike Conversion people also want you to know that their kit will pay for itself in just six months–provided you have a 20-mile round trip commute, and currently spend around $10/week on gas and $25-50 on parking–since traveling on a bike outfitted with their system will cost about $0.15 a week (given the cost of entry) saving you a conservative $39.85 a week, or $2,072.20 a year.
