Recall: 450 adult tricycles recalled due to crash, injury hazards WPMT FOX 43
A recall has been issued for an adult Tricycle due to crash and injury hazards.

About 450 TerraTrike Rambler E.V.O adult tricycles have been recalled due to the torque sensor in the wheel unexpectedly activating and causing the trike to power forward, posing crash and injury hazards.

Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled trikes and return them to the place of purchase for a free speed sensor installation and a software upgrade.

The serial numbers in the recall are listed on the firm’s website here.

The bikes were sold at authorized TerraTrike dealers, independent bicycle dealers and recumbent bicycle specialty stores nationwide and online at TerraTrike’s website from August 2017 through October 1, 2018 for about $3,500.

Yep. I've sold Terra Trikes in the past, I've also seen their products at dealer shows...there's a reason I am not longer a dealer.

Wow a lot of unhappiness with TT I see? We bought my wife's Terra Trike Cruiser used at AngleTech back in Feb. and it's been a EXCELLENT machine, she likes it so much she'd rather have a E-assist motor added to it than look at a newer pedal assist trike of a different model. Even with having to change to the ex-small boom a 152mm crankarm chainwheel set, etc. it works great is very stable (much more than my SunSeeker) on fast downhills, (it has indirect steering) and it's given us ZERO problems in over 500 miles of riding so far! I'd be more than happy to have a new terra trike. The recall is due to the Falco E-assist hub motor not the trike it self. The new EVO E-assist trike they just brought out has the new Bosch Mid-Mount motor on it so that should cure the problem for the future.

I don't personally have anything against TerraTrike. I've never owned or even ridden one. I just saw the recall notice through the Consumer Product Safety Commission. FWIW, 500 miles is not all that many miles for a new HPV. But I'd expect anything major to show up by then, or at least by 1,000 miles. I wonder if other brands & dealers have the same policy toward sales of new machines as does PowerOnCycling: bring it back in after a couple of hundred miles for a free checkup & adjustments as needed. How does that work when you buy from a dealer that is too far away for any future repairs or warranty work?

While I don't have a TerraTrike, I've ridden a few and not had any issues. Bang-for-the-buck, they're hard to beat.

First of all, let's get one thing straight. There is no "HATE" going on here and to throw out that word so easily is not wise. Just because I do not like their products any more nor wish to be a dealer does not mean I am full of hate. Wow, didn't know that simple disagreements on recumbents meant one is full of hate now. Usually that word is used in politics if you disagree with someone over an issue...I guess it has started to spread outside the political arena now. So if I don't like Sunseeker or RANS does that mean I "hate" them now too???? I thought that I would become a dealer for Terra Trike, and I was for a while, AGAINST the advice of more than one SEASONED recumbent dealer because of the way that TT treated their dealers. Well, I became a dealer anyway and thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt...well I learned the hard way after becoming a dealer discovered why the other dealers warned me against them. And those dealers to this day are not TT dealers either.

Also, I used to manufacturer recumbents...I KNOW what good quality and poor quality can be. During my short time as a dealer for them I had nothing but poor quality from them. I had to fix, replace, repair, warranty issue one after another. Lost customers etc. I have been at dealer shows where TT wouldn't even let people test ride their products because they themselves admitted that the product was not fully tested, didn't know how it would hold up and they didn't want people to try it out for fear of something disastrous occurring. If they have straightened up their "quality game" good for them, but I still won't be a dealer. The fact that they didn't vet their electric motors prior to putting them on is just one more reason for me not to be a dealer. So no, it is not HATE, rather a business decision. I prefer to be treated with respect and I like to have good quality products in my shop that my customers will enjoy.

As stated we bought it used, so it's had quite a few "miles", the 500 is what JoLynn has ridden it since Feb. 2018, maybe all the bugs are out of it as it's a older design. I've noticed off the trike pages/forums that many that ordered via internet and aren't lucky enough to have a "recumbent dealer/shop" any where near, seem to find a "willing" LBS and get whatever they need done adjustment, etc. wise. If we didn't have Angletech, we'd be working with the Colorado Springs Bike Shop, a family shop been around since the early 70's and the will work on "ANY" bicycle, trike, etc. I've seen them fix wheel chairs and baby buggies! :)

Ok, I changed the wording, hopefully you will forgive my "wording". I've seen this "Ill feelings" towards SUN and Terra Trike on many trike pages/forums and yet there seems to be a LOT of very happy Terra Trike owners out there in the world. Maybe when you delt with them their product wasn't up to par but they "seem" to be quite good machines. LOL, I ride a Sunseeker which is the "red haired step-child" of recumbent trikes and according to what I've read, the feelings towards them reminds me of "Harley-Davidson". I owned and rode motorcycles for 50 years, lot's of brands and types but if you show up at a Harley-Davidson Rally on a "Japanese Cruiser", in the old days, they find one and let you "beat it with a slug hammer" for charity!! LOL, I can just imagine the same thing happening to my "Sunseeker EZ Tad SX" at a Catrike Rally as they seem to have the most rabid following in recumbent trike ownership!! It's just a "perception" from a newbie recumbent trike rider, so don't get so upset my friend. :) I'm sure you are a most excellent recumbent dealer and I'm glad you look after your customers by selling what you FEEL is a great bike/trike! Have a most excellent day! :)

    TerraTrike recalls adult tricycles ConsumerAffairs

TerraTrike of Grand Rapids, Mich., is recalling about 450 TerraTrike Rambler E.V.O adult tricycles.

The torque sensor in the wheel can activate unexpectedly and cause the trike to power forward, posing crash and injury hazards.

The firm has received five reports of the torque sensor activating while not pedaling. No injuries have been reported.

This recall involves yellow TerraTrike Rambler Electrical Vehicle Option ( E.V.O.) recumbent pedal-powered trikes with an electric assist wheel.

The trikes have two wheels in the front and one wheel in the back with a large black hub motor. “Terra Trike” is printed on the front of the back rest area. The model name “Rambler E.V.O.” is located on the front outrigger tube that connects to the front left wheel.

The serial numbers included in this recall are listed on the firm’s website at www.terratrike.com and are located under the main tube on a barcoded sticker near the rear wheel. The serial numbers are also stamped into the head (vertical) tube of the outrigger.

The trikes, manufactured in Taiwan (frame) and India (torque sensor), were sold at authorized TerraTrike dealers, independent bicycle dealers and recumbent bicycle specialty stores nationwide and online at www.TerraTrike.com from August 2017, through October 1, 2018, for about $3,500.

    What to do
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled trikes and return them to the place of purchase for a free speed sensor installation and a software upgrade.

Consumers may contact TerraTrike at (800) 945-9110 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (ET) Monday through Friday or online at www.terratrike.com and click on “Important Falco E.V.O. Recall” near the bottom of the page for more information.

Thank you for your clarification. I like SunSeekers...yes they are the bottom of the "cost" totem pole. Yes, you get what you pay for. However, for beginners just getting into trikes, they are are great. Not just in price point but believe it or not, the quality isn't bad either. In all my years of being a dealer, I have not had any returns and just one warranty issues with their products.

Like I also said, if TT has improved their product quality, good for them, it was something that needed to be done and I am glad they are taking steps in that direction. Last thing they need is to have a customer accidentally thrown into traffic or off a roadside and get seriously injured.

I missed any reference by anyone to hate (or love either, for that matter). Everyone has preferences, some based on experiences, some based on perceptions. I have a Catrike, two RANS, and a Bacchetta. I thoroughly enjoy each for what they are, and each is set up for a different type of ride. But I don't love any of them. That's reserved for my family, friends, and fellow humans. I don't hate any of them, but there is this one son-in-law...

Merry Christmas to all. It is quite possible that our odd weather here in God's Country, east Tennessee, will let some of us go out and pedal on Christmas Day wearing only a single layer or two. Best safe, be kind, and be responsible.
