Our TerraTrike tandem was originally just an 8-speed with a Shimano internal shift rear hub and 32 tooth chainwheels. It left a lot to be desired in the gearing department. I first converted the rear shift to a derailleur setup using a Shimano Altus medium cage/large wheel 8-speed derailleur, Altus 11-34 tooth 8-speed cassette that I mixed-n-matched 4th/5th/6th gears on (where the Tandem runs the most), Altus Mountain Bike trigger shift levers, Tandem shift cable, and Dura Ace housing...Worked Perfect...!!!!!!...next I added an Efneo 3-speed gearbox crankset on the front with 28/40/50 ratios....The Tandem has been waaaaaay more fun after these changes.
I've added a full set of TerraTrike Large Panniers, Large Rack Bag, seat Bags, Seat Pads and Wedges.....3 Waterbottles.....Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tires and Tubes.....Cateye Padrone Computer....Mirrors, Lights, and Bell.....Really Comfortable All Day Ride now...!!!!!!!!......... 21616559_1671423992868907_3730377807598394221_n.jpg

Thanxx for mentioning this, as I'm not sure I had heard about it before...so I had to go and look it up! :wink9:

What are the key differentiators between Efeno and other manufacturers?
There are two types of front gearboxes on the market:
    1. 2-speed systems like Truvativ Hammerschmidt, Patterson Mobility or Schlumpf
    2. multi-speed systems like Pinion

The problem with 2-speed systems is that all of them (Truvativ, Patterson Mobility, Schlumpf) have a gear ratio of at least 66% (the difference between the gears). It is almost as much as between 1st and 3rd gear in a three chainring front crankset. It is simply too much for comfortable gear shifting. When you upshift you feel too much resistance. When you downshift you feel like your leg is falling down in a hole.

With 3-speed system the bicycle is much more naturally configured. One can use 2nd gear as “neutral” for riding on flat area. 1st gear for climbing and 3rd gear for down-hilling. And what is a “neutral” gear in a 2-speed system?

That is probably the main reason why all 2-speed systems are very niche products – they simply do not add as much value as they should.

A.D., the Efneo works really great...smooth shifting while pedaling or not...I've been really impressed with it so far.....1st is a 28tooth chainwheel, the other two are internal planetary....The Front "Captain" does have to stop pedaling to come back to 1st from 2nd or 3rd, but all other shifts can be made either way. Stoker pedaling with the Independent Pedal System (IPS) makes no difference during this shift and can continue pedaling......

So David, is that how you use it? Just wondering if you consider 2nd gear neutral.(i.e. not easier or harder to pedal, as 1st and 3rd are) :idunno:

Also, is the resistance minimal? From what I understand, the Schlumpf drives do have a noticeable drag to them.

A.D., it has very little resistance in the 2nd and 3rd gears....not really enough to notice unless You're specifically "feeling for it"....I've ridden Schlumpf and Pattersons and the resistance/drag was immediately noticeable...the Efneo is much, much better in this department...!!!!!!!...
