Hey has anyone homebuilt their own bike flags. It's easy take 2 car flags of any team and put them on a normal bike flag pole. Mine are 2 a U.S. flag on the left and an O.S.U. Not Oklamhoma. OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY. on the right.
    Cheers

Some other good sources for FLASHY objects are KITE websites and stores, like...

That windsock with lights sounds g-r-e-a-t !!! Is it heavy and weigh down your pole? What kind of lights and power do you put in the red, white and blue wind sock?

FireFly, It must not be too heavy, doesn't affect the poles at all. The lites may weigh an ounce or so.I think they were called "Frogs" doen't quote me on that cuz there are a couple different ones i looked at.They look more like tiny turtles, just big enough to house a watch type button battery and a single LED.But on flash mode they are very visible inside the sock.....:jiggy9:

Update on my homebuilt flags. We had Ike's winds come through here last sunday and let me tell you all the flag poles bent to the left and the flags really stood straight out, but that survived Ike.

I have read many posts on the subject of "To Flag Or Not To Flag" I never saw a reason to flag.Really nice big ones do indeed make you more visible at a distance. Only problem is that I couldn't care less if the car can see me half a mile away. My problem is when I am riding in traffic I just want them to move over just a little bit more.

I was gifted a promo flag that is bright orange and 8" x 16 1/2". I mounted it on a pole that I taped to the back of the seat. It only sticks out 12" beyond the seat. WOW - the cars move over just that little bit more. When we are riding in traffic we haven't been crowded not once since mounting it.

Yesterday we took a ride out into the country. Two lane highway, moderate traffic, lots of big trucks tho. Not once did they come any where near us.

For me this is the solution to getting a little riding room on the road, and best of all we can't feel any drag from the little small flag.

Leaky Duck ,that is one of the reasons i have a fondness for the soutwest desert;you can see for miles...But riding through parts of the east and especialy east Texas,i was very glad to have my 7' tall flag mount. The speed limit on some quite narrow 2 lane roads is 60mph. There seems considerable big rig traffic considering the rural nature of the area. But the killer was the constant rolling hills some coming to a very sudden summit.I road in a pick/up with a pastor who let me sleep in his church and wanted to buy my breakfast the next morning. As we were traveling to and from town we came up on some slower traffic and a few times on some of the hills he had to suddenly get on the brakes as we could see the on coming big rig but not the car or tractor in our own lane.He remarked about the unusual traffic being possibly from the hurricane damage and suggested he "might ought to slow down"..He was doing just under the posted limit already..So as i left the church on my trike i adjusted the flag to make sure it was up as high as possible and even turned on the blinking light to add any measure of visibility i could...Most drivers,(actually all but 2 have given me a wide berth when they could;but a couple did not have sufficient time to allow for the other traffic since the hills left such a short window of visibility....
You are right however about adding a little width giving the drivers a feeling of needing to give a wider berth.I have noticed since i began riding the trike, everyone swings wider, even at their on peril in some cases....I recently saw a special on tv about traffic studies and the showed that if you reduce a traffic lanes width by as little as a few inches people tend to slow down several miles per hour... ;But they still have to know your there in time to move over ;so i think my new bags are going to be the Radical side pods;that will give me another 6 inches in width...
    See y'all on the road.....:jiggy9:

You said East Texas. I'm originally from Nacogdoches and got a daughter on Lake Palestine on the Tyler side. It is so beautiful there. I miss it. But yes, traffic is awful. It was sparcely populated when I was a kid. But lots of Dallas and Houston people retire in the beautiful pine forests, rolling hills and red dirt of East Texas. I was there two weeks ago and took my TerraTrike. Maybe we could have rode.

On my LWB lowracer, my seat is only 9" off the ground, I need all the visibility and vehicle clearance I can get! I mounted a flag so that it angles 1-2 feet to my left. I've had excellent response from cars going around the flag ... and not crowding me. Maybe they don't want to damage their cars by hitting the flag. I don't know. But it sure works for me!

Freth, what kind of flag mount did you use to get it to angle to the left? I just have a hole in the top of my seat to drop a flag pole in.

I quite agree with you. Most people care more for their cars than the bikes they pass.

We just got in from a 10 miles ride in the dark. Most of it was on a Bike Trail so we didn't have any cars to contend with. Now I need to figure our how to put a flashey thingy on the end of my little flag.
