The VA’s whole health approach emphasizes the importance of staying active and being physically fit. Jim Klempka, a Vietnam Army Veteran and Purple Heart recipient, is doing just that with his new recumbent bike provided by the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System's Recreation Therapy program.

The VA recreation therapy is a caring approach that uses enjoyable activities to support Veterans facing injuries, chronic illnesses, or disabilities. It focuses on personalized care to enhance health and functional abilities while promoting healthy leisure activities for a fulfilling life. Veterans can qualify by completing an Adaptive Sports evaluation, where their primary care provider makes a physical or mental diagnosis that restricts their ability to participate independently in sports or activities.

Jim sustained injuries during his time in Vietnam, which later led to further injuries in his lower body and affected his mobility. Biking was one of Jim’s favorite activities, but as he got older, it became increasingly difficult due to his injuries.

“It's gotten more challenging. I've had some back issues and sitting on a bike for long periods has gotten very uncomfortable,” said Klempka.

Brett Gaede, a recreation therapist at Sioux Falls VA Health Care System, contacted Jim Klempka after learning about his injuries and the possibility of getting him a recumbent bike through the Rec Therapy program.

“The recumbent bike allows him to stay active while reducing stress on his joints and helps promote improved blood flow to his leg,” said Gaede.

The Sioux Falls VA recreation therapy team adjusted the bike to meet Kempka’s needs, ensuring the controls and pedals were properly positioned for a successful bike ride.

“I’ve never seen a recumbent bike before and they had me try it out in Sioux Falls,” said Klempka. “It's extremely comfortable, and it allows you to keep all your legs and joint moving just like riding a regular bike.”

Klempka has visited the Sioux Falls VA for various healthcare needs related to his time in Vietnam and has had a great experience. He is now including the recreation therapy program in his list of positive experiences.
