Ha, faster is ALWAYS a good thing.:wink9:

Sad to say, I didn't get to ride today,:hissyfit9: but that was ok, I had several folks stop by. Even got to chat with Don S. for a little bit, hadn't seen him in...oh...forever.:wink9: Lots of folks out walking and biking. That is encouraging.

45 miles on the tandem today - warm enough to ride with just a short sleeved cycling top (at least when the SUN was out ) Spring is getting closer. Cycled up through London on the Greenspeed tandem with my blind friend, went down to East London to have a look at the 2012 Olympic site. It's looking pretty much finished bar all the landscaping. They've already held some track cycling events in the velodrome and diving in the swimming pool, so looks like we won't be embarrassed by not having finished it. Of course still plenty of other things that could go wrong, like not winning any medals !

By the way, I was going to ride a little bit today while I was at the shop but a crew of tree cutters started working on the trees along the street behind my shop and well, there was minimal room for me to go by...:sad9:not to mention I didn't relish the idea of being hit in the head by falling tree branches...:eek9:

Though colder yesterday at 24 F, it was clear skies that begged to be ridden under and since we'd had no fresh snow and quite a bit more melt, I decided I was going to make another attempt at the 18+ mile loop I wiped on last time.

Unsurprisingly, the paths between here and the country road I needed were PACKED. Whole groups of people walking together while singles or couples took up what space was left, with or without dogs, bikes, strollers. I think all of Uppsala was wandering along that 2 mile stretch. The slowest Loke and I have ever covered it, I think.

Soon we were pedaling along the roads. The sun had quite a bit of strength. In fact, my left side with the full sun on it, was almost two warm beneath my two layers. My right side, however, was down right chilly. The only comfort zone seemed to be right down my middle somewhere. :rolleyes9:

That wind also started to worry me a bit. Coming as hard as it did, I was going to have to go into it at some point.

Unfortunately, my worries turned in other directions. My gears started to mess with me. The shifting was jerky or loose and it kept getting worse as the miles went on.

I made it past the church where I'd wrecked the last time, giving a little cheer, and found myself slogging into the wind. With my worry about the gears, I decided to turn back for a shorter route.

As I was climbing a hill, the chain jumped inside the rear cog wheel. I managed to get it back on, shifted down, but as soon as I put pressure on it to climb the hill, it ended back up against the spokes again. Using the language my sailor of a father taught me so well in childhood, I managed to drag the trike to a parking lot covered in slick ice to wait for Jens. Loke and I did just over 9 miles. :mad9:

I'm about to call the cycle shop in Stockholm who did the work on my trike last year. Hopefully they can fit it in before April since I'm sure everyone is starting to buy bikes and get older ones tuned up.

Honestly, I've been surprised at myself! :eek9: My heavy thermals feel like the equivalent of 3 of my old layers, but are so much easier to move in. I'm guessing it has something to do with the friction between multiple surface layers. As I've fine-tuned other parts of my cold weather kit, I've gained another 15-20 degree window to ride in. Low 40's used to be the cut off. I didn't get to test it last winter because of all the snow.

Over an inch of snow or deeply rutted ice are still show stoppers for me. This winter has been amazingly low snow.

Oh! And it looks like I'll have my Trice back on Wednesday! :jiggy9: Barring complications between the shop's winter shortened opening hours and Jens' work schedule any way.

Well I finally got out to ride today. Temp in the 60's. I know. That is crazy warm!!! Did 21 miles.

One of the things I like about the City of Knoxville is its commitment to the greenway system. We have had two mayors since the original mayor started the program and all the successors have continued the commitment.

So now the problem. As you know I mainly ride the greenways during my lunch hour during the week. Well they have them all torn up right now. My greenway that heads out west is torn up at Tyson Park as they are upgrading the sewer system. It is torn up at the University of Tennessee section too for the same reason.

My greenway heading east is blocked off because of construction to the Henley Street bridge. Luckily I can get on the main road should and bypass the blockage and ride the rest of those rides.

Then I have been riding Cherokee Boulevard and doing loops (like I did today for 21 miles). Now they are repaving Cherokee, so I won't be able to ride that one either.

The good news is by summer all should be open and by spring some will be open. Nice new asphalt riding trails. I can't wait!!!
