Well I set a record today. Two tire fixes in 15.7 miles.

Got a hole in the tube. Thought OK I can fix this so got out my tire patch kit. Got it all fixed. When I put the pump on the valve I started pumping it up. Everything was going fine. When I removed the pump the valve stem came with it. :o_O9: So I had to get out my brand new tube and put it in. Pumped it up. Valve stem stayed where it was supposed to be. Made it home. Put new tube in bike trunk.

Whew! That was a hard long 15.7 mile ride.

OK Dave, now it is your turn!

    Jon,

How old are your "new" tubes? If the valve comes out with the pump, they've got to be really old!!! Well, it's either that or you have Presta type valves in which case it doesn't matter how old they are.

I really do like the Schrader valves on the tubes I use for my V2.

The valve broke off the tube at its base? That is unusual unless it has been highly stressed. Sometimes pumping using a small pump with a short hose or no hose can stretch the tube/stem junction and cause a leak.

If the valve itself came out of the stem, it just wasn't torqued down enough at the factory. I've had that happen several times with Schwalbe tubes.

They are 1 year old Nashbar tubes. Not old at all but now I buy Schalbe tubes. We will see if they are better.

Ok when I pumped up the tire and took off the pump head the top part of the valve broke off. Gone! So I decided to see if it could still hold air and put the pump on it some more. When I took off the pump a second time no valve at all. Air gushed out. :(

    Jon,

Check carefully around the valve stem hole to be sure the edges of the hole are completely covered by the rim tape. One time I kept getting flats at the valve stem. Even though the rim tape looked OK there was a spot where the edge of the valve stem hole had worked through the tape and was cutting into the tube.

Ok let me 'splain this. When you unscrew a presto valve you have that top part that unscrews. Once it is fully unscrewed you can start pumping up your tube. That top part broke off. Never had that happen before.

Then when I remove my pump head the second time there was nothing holding the air back. GONE! And it didn't go up so it must have gone into the tube. Very strange!!!

Now I get it. That happens to me from time to time. It usually starts when I pull the pump head off a little sideways and bend that threaded section a little. Eventually it will break.

Sounds to me like the that the pump gripped the valve stem so that, as it flexed side to side, it broke off the small shaft that connects the nut (that you unscrew) to the valve body. Or, maybe you have the round nut that holds the valve stem fully out of the wheel rim too tight. That was discussed here before. Should be less than finger tight. Some say throw it away entirely.

I tell you what i think that MTB Riding i have been doing has helped me in the road riding department at least endurance wise.

Next Saturday- 17 March starts the New Brevet Season- I plan on doing a 200k Sat and another 200k on Sunday-If i am not dead from Sat. I figure if i cannot do back to back 200k's I will never be able to do a 600 k.

Rode about 10 miles today. 3.4-ish miles of a rolling walk with Loke followed by an attempt to do a longer ride by myself since my husband is home to keep Loke from going destructive and howling.

The wind and clouds drifting in to obscure what had started as a clear day just sucked my will to press on. The idea that a 20 mile ride might take me more than 3 hours even without the dog because of wind tossed in with the fact I was starving was too much. Food and Dr. Dolittle with the trainer (and no wind!) were waiting at home.

That said, the last 4 miles back home I ripped along at 15 mph. Gotta love tailwinds. Now, I'm going to eat and do at least 3 hours on the trainer while singing 'Talk to the Animals' and various other tunes. :tongue9:
