Toyota dealt with a similar issue with the electric hybrid Prius a few years ago. Some people were killed in at least one accident. I seem to recall it was a software problem. My point is, have we gone too far when putting cyclists at risk from defective software and exotic controls? Torque sensors, speed sensors, scrambled code, etc. Face it: it's a bicycle (Tricycle, HPV, whatever). It's supposed to be a simple machine for recreation, transportation, and exercise. When did it get so complicated, and why? One could argue that, without such, some people would not be able to experience the joy of cycling. Maybe so, but it adds many layers of complexity and that adds many failure points. I can fix a flat or a broken chain. I'd hate to get stuck 50 miles away because my electrically assisted vehicle died for lack of a few ones and zeroes. Just my opinion. Feel free to make it your own.

    I agree 100%!
Too many gadgets, gizmos and batteries ruin the ride! I ride to get away from all the 'clutter' of modern life.
Get out and get some exercise and fresh air and don't worry about the latest 'stuff'!

From what I've read and seen, you can still pedal the unit home even if the battery dies or the motor quits working. I can see their use, you see I have a wife that although she can RIDE all day, she's VERY SLOW, avg. 4-5 mph. and much less on steep hills with NO assist! Now if it's just her and I on a ride, it's not a problem, I just set my pace to her's by "spinning" in a lower gear on the flats and if she's in her granny gear up a steep hill, (22 chain wheel-34 rear cog), I will pass her and wait at the top of the hill. The PROBLEM is when we are riding in a group and they end up having to "WAIT" for her to catch up, a lot of riders don't have that much patient's and start "GRIPING" and MOANING" and we usually end up "quitting" the group in the end!! IF we could afford E-assist for her, then she could at least keep up at the back of the group ride and all the group would stay HAPPY!! So yes, I will end up putting E-assist on her trike but now I have to figure out where I'm going to come up with $18-2400 dollars for the kit and installation by AngleTech! Well, LOL it's only MONEY! ;)

Agreed, as I’d much rather see a bike/trike rider out enjoying themselves vs. sitting at home...motor, or no-motor. :heelclick:

I know the feelings your wife has experienced when you think you’re going for a group ride, but others are in such good shape that to her she feels as if it’s a race. :hissyfit9: (i.e. something she has no interest in doing and certainly did not sign up for)

Sadly in almost any group ride, you’ll have those that sprint off (never to be seen again), those that (if you’re lucky) make up a majority of the group, and those that struggle to keep up for whatever reasons.(i.e. changing gears, slow cadence, physical endurance, etc.)

An electrical assist is a GREAT way to help level the playing field, and keep more of a group together for a longer span of time. Just my :2cents: worth.
