I just joined bent riders. I bought a Burley Hepcat from a neighbor that was moving. This bike maybe has 500 miles on it but sat in a crappy shed for at least the 10 years I've lived in the neighborhood. I filled the tires, got it lubed up in key areas and soaked the chain in PB to remove the rust. I took it out for a ride for the first time yesterday which was quite a Challenge at first but after some seat and handlebar adjustments I did 10 miles of gradually more comfortable riding. Especially enjoyable since I haven't been able to ride a regular bike since being hit by a car four years ago and shattering my wrists among many other broken bones.

I could tell pretty quickly this is going to get me cycling again. The bike still needs a lot of adjustment work, derailers especially, but I was also hoping to add seat struts. At 6'-3" and currently 210, there seemed to be some flex in the seat while climbing a couple modest hills. The seat rail is on solid and tensioners as tight as I feel comfortable tightening without spares. No cracks in seat frame or welds either, there just seems to be some flex.

Until a couple weeks ago I had no idea Burley didn't make or service their bikes anymore, they have trailers all over where I live. I'd like to find seat struts that might work even if I need to modify another brand. I could also use a new chain and maybe idler wheel. I can buy bulk chain and make my own if need be. Also, the seat clamps and tensioners look like the storage conditions might have deteriorated them. I'd love to get a manual for the bike as well. Everything else just needs a good cleaning and lube. Product tips on that would be appreciated.

Sorry for the long first subject matter post.

    Thanks,
    KP

Courtesy of the WayBackMachine, check out this link for some more info about the HepCat bike.

As for the seat, check out the post here (by RealEngr) and Serenity might be able to help you with some of the parts you're looking for since they purchased some of the Burley tooling.

:mmm: Hmmm, well the WayBackMachine didn't have the actual Burley HepCat manual archived in PDF form.:gripe: However, here is the Road Test for it via RCN Issue #71.(see p.15)

    :update:
For other archived issues of RCN see the webpage here.

Excellent so far! Updated seat mount slide parts stabilized the base a lot. The rear seat strut addition definitely improved hill climbing. Added a rear pack I can mount my Sound Cylinder blue tooth speaker for music. I don't feel comfortable riding any bike with ear buds or headphones. Having derailleur problems but will try a little more tuning before I give up and take to shop.

Can't believe how many people comment on the bike.

    Thanks for your curiosity!

Derailleurs are derailleurs, no matter what kind of bike. When in doubt, refer to any of a zillion YouTube instructional videos. Good luck with getting it set up for yourself, and report back on your riding progress.

No idea if this is legit or not, but someone claims to have a Burley Hepcat Owners Manual on Google Docs found here.(LINK Removed, see below...)

    :update:
:hand7: Do be very leery of the above link. I run a Mac computer and tried to access the file and got a message indicating I needed to update my Adobe Flash Player in order to continue. I stopped, opened my Flash Player and it is already up-to-date with the latest version per Adobe. The website which appears to tell you, you need to update is NOT Adobe. However, it does appear to be a legitimate business. :worried: So, as they say in Latin: Caveat Empor (i.e. Buyer Beware)
