    Why a bolt through?

I'm not sure of your question. I think that you are asking, "Why bother with a bolt or head tube?" "Why not just hook up directly to the fork, like the Vision did?"

Well, the front fork on the Bacchetta is too far away from the seat for a direct hook-up. The sides of the handlebar would hit the sides of the seat before you turned the front wheel any appreciable amount.

I saw a video of a Carbent, where the manufacturer hooked up a handlebar directly to the front fork. The Carbent has similiar front fork to seat spacing as the Bacchetta. Anyway, the handlebars stuck out to the sides about a foot and a half each side and looked strange and unwieldy to say the least.

Why not just use the head tube for both bikes?

I built the 700 Giro with the bolt, first. After experiencing that method, I went into the added on head-tube of the Giro 20.

I have a Longbike Gulfstream tandem with underseat steering. Your set up is much better than what I have. I especially like the head tube version. Mine is a single bolt through the frame. It steers fine but the handlebars get wobbly over time until I snug 'em up. Seems to me a head tube arrangement would make the pivot very stable. My only concern would be the added weight. Our bike is already a behemoth.

    Bolt vs headtube

I agree about the slop in the bolt setup.

I don't think that there is much of a weight penalty, though. The headtube is not as beefy as you might think. After that the headsets and steerer tube are all standard bike parts, so weight was considered in their manufacture.

I haven't had the, dual headtube, bike out as much this winter as I'd like. (In Michigan we seem to be in a permanent polar vortex.) So, I need to put some serious miles on the dual headtube before I'll know if there are any problems with it.
